FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Does a speed pedelec require a licence plate?
Yes. In many countries, including the Netherlands, a speed pedelec is legally classified as a moped and therefore requires a licence plate before it can be used on public roads.
Is a helmet mandatory on a speed pedelec?
Yes. Speed pedelec riders are required to wear an approved helmet, often meeting the NTA 8776 standard in the Netherlands. A standard bicycle helmet is generally not sufficient.
What is the top speed of a speed pedelec?
A speed pedelec provides pedal assistance up to 45 km/h, compared with 25 km/h for a standard e-bike. This higher speed places it in a different legal vehicle category.
Is third-party liability insurance required?
Yes. In many countries, including the Netherlands, third-party liability insurance is mandatory for speed pedelecs. A standard bicycle insurance policy is not sufficient.
Is a rear-view mirror mandatory?
Yes. A handlebar-mounted rear-view mirror is mandatory on speed pedelecs in the Netherlands because of their higher speeds. At PENDLR you'll find mirrors from brands such as Busch & Müller and Ergon.
