Cargo bikes and LEVs as a smart alternative for urban and business transport

Cities are facing stricter environmental regulations, increasing traffic congestion, and a growing demand for clean, efficient delivery options. While sustainable transport was long primarily an ambition on paper, we are now seeing a clear shift toward tangible applications in practice. New vehicle concepts, technological innovations, and smart collaborations are making it possible to truly reshape urban logistics. For fleet owners and logistics planners, this means exploring, experimenting, and investing in flexible solutions that align with the dynamic nature of the city. Sustainable Urban Mobility on the Rise More and more companies are choosing cleaner transport solutions within city centers. In addition to electric vans, cargo bikes are becoming increasingly popular. One alternative that is gaining ground is the longtail bike, an extended bicycle with a large rear rack. These bikes offer a strong combination of load capacity and agility, and are easier to park than traditional cargo bikes. They are also suitable for a wide variety of transport needs. Innovations such as smart trailers make it possible to temporarily convert a regular bicycle into a freight bike with added cargo capacity, without requiring a major investment. Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) for Efficient Urban Logistics The number of Light Electric Vehicles on the market is growing rapidly. These compact electric vehicles, known from examples like the delivery vehicles used by Picnic, are designed for efficient urban mobility. Many LEVs are equipped with pedals but no chain, using a drive by wire system for propulsion. Because they are legally classified as bicycles, no driver’s license is needed to operate them. This makes them especially attractive to employers and fleet owners, who can assign a wider group of employees to urban delivery and service tasks. Low Total Cost of Ownership and High Vehicle Availability Fleet managers are focused on keeping the cost per kilometer low and avoiding unnecessary downtime. For transporting heavier goods in urban areas, LEVs offer a strong solution. Their cargo space is often designed to fit standard roll containers. Cargo bikes can also serve well in business use, provided they maintain high availability and low operational costs. PENDLR works with a nationwide network of mobile repair partners. Through smart inventory management and next day delivery of spare parts, repairs can be carried out quickly, keeping your fleet running smoothly. PENDLR is also launching test programs to include LEV components in its product range. The goal is to soon offer a complete parts package that covers both cargo bikes and LEVs. Are you a fleet manager exploring sustainable urban transport? Get in touch with us. Together we can explore the options and share valuable insights.

Eurobike 2025: Sustainability, Innovation, and Opportunities in Micromobility

Despite the current challenges in the market, the bicycle industry continues to evolve rapidly. At Eurobike 2025, the international trade fair for bicycles and micromobility, numerous developments came together that show where the future of cycling and smart mobility is heading. Several colleagues from PENDLR were present, and we are pleased to share key insights on sustainability, innovation, and micromobility. Sustainability Becomes the New Standard Brands such as Basil and New Looxs presented their latest collections, featuring fresh designs and clever solutions. Both are making strong efforts to use recycled materials, responding to the growing demand for sustainable alternatives within the micromobility sector. Schwalbe also emphasized sustainability in its latest product range. Selle Royal expanded its Stracciatella line and introduced the new Nivo grips, which offer improvements in both grip and comfort. Sustainability is no longer a niche topic, but a fundamental part of product development across the entire micromobility landscape. Innovation at Brand and Product Level There were many exciting new developments. ABUS introduced two new helmets: the ultra-light and aerodynamic Airbreaker 2.0, and the Taipan, specially designed for gravel riders but also relevant for various forms of micromobility. AXA launched the Atlas, a new generation of ring locks that smartly combines safety with user convenience. Eovolt also made a big announcement: the company will continue under a new name, UTO. Why the change? Because UTO is expanding with its very first non-electric model. The name Eovolt mainly suggested e-bikes, while UTO reflects a broader ambition to reach more people, both with and without electric assistance. The electric version, the UTO PRO20 E-bike (formerly known as Afternoon Pro), won the Eurobike Gold Award in the e-bike category, an important recognition within the micromobility market. Cargo Bikes and Light Electric Vehicles on the Rise Traditional cargo bikes have long been dominant, but now we are seeing a growing number of longtail solutions. These extended bicycles offer a more flexible option: they are lighter, easier to handle, and suitable for various transport needs. Innovations such as smart trailers also allow a standard bike to be temporarily converted into a longtail, giving users additional cargo capacity with minimal investment. At the same time, the supply of Light Electric Vehicles is growing rapidly. These compact, electrically powered vehicles are becoming an important part of the micromobility market. They are designed for efficient urban travel, often without a chain and with a drive-by-wire system. Since they are legally considered bicycles, no driving license is required. This makes them attractive to employers and fleet operators who want to involve a broader group of employees in urban delivery and service tasks. Bicycle Retail Is Visibly Changing One noticeable trend on the Eurobike 2025 exhibition floor was the changing approach to product presentation. In the past, the focus was often on filling the shelves with as many products as possible. Now, more and more brands are choosing to highlight atmosphere, experience, and a strong brand identity. This shift toward storytelling and brand building matches the changing expectations of consumers within the micromobility sector. Micromobility Is Gaining Visibility, Also at Eurobike That micromobility is no longer a niche becomes clear from a strategic change Eurobike will implement from 2026. The familiar trade fair will focus more on the world of sports and performance cycling, while organizer Fairnamic is launching a new specialized event called mobifuture. This new fair will focus entirely on electric micromobility, with special attention to e-scooters, cargo bikes, microcars, and shared mobility solutions. The two fairs will continue as separate brands, but will take place at the same time and at the same location in Frankfurt. This creates a clear distinction: Eurobike will highlight sport, performance, high-tech, and cycling culture, while mobifuture will be the central place for urban and sustainable micromobility solutions. Seizing Opportunities Together The bicycle industry is accelerating. Innovation, sustainability, and flexibility are no longer trends but essential requirements. At PENDLR, we believe micromobility is the key to sustainable transport in cities and beyond. Whether it is about smart parts and accessories, cargo solutions, or the layout of your product shelves, we are your partner in micromobility. Together we make daily commutes more flexible, efficient, and green. The opportunities are here, let us seize them together.

The cargo bike is conquering the city and that requires the right parts and support

The way we move around the city is changing – and we love it. New forms of micromobility are becoming increasingly popular. In urban areas, we’re trading in our cars, public transport, or delivery vans for bikes, scooters, and of course, the cargo bike — also known as LEV (Light Electric Vehicle). From school runs to sustainable deliveries The modern cargo bike is no longer a niche. In cities, they’re everywhere: from parents on the school run to couriers, technicians, and logistics providers navigating traffic with ease. Thanks to their agility, electric support, and generous cargo space, cargo bikes are perfect for city life. They save time, reduce costs, and cut emissions — exactly what’s needed in busy, low-traffic zones. That makes the cargo bike not just practical, but a smart, future-proof choice. Zero emissions, lower operational costs, and faster last-mile delivery. In a city that’s becoming greener and smarter, the cargo bike is the logical answer. International Cargo Bike Festival 2024

The cargo bike—a mode of transport with the most potential in micromobility—has its own dedicated festival. What other vehicle, besides the bicycle, can say the same? Last Friday, we attended the International Cargo Bike Festival, held October 25-26 at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht (The Netherlands). Here’s a look at what caught our eye. More choices for you as a business owner It was the perfect day to focus entirely on the promising future of the cargo bike. Alongside more brands with their own cargo bike designs, we also saw new solutions for different types of cargo. It's not just small parcels anymore; larger containers are joining the game. What we observed last year is even more evident now: cargo bikes are thriving in the micromobility sector, and as a business owner, you have more choices than ever within the cargo bike range—different brands, options for your own branding, and tailored solutions for various types of cargo. Growing interest, despite political headlines Interest in cargo bikes is booming, the benefits are clear, and businesses are increasingly inspired by the incredible initiatives already in place. In general, we’re seeing more people opting for bikes, cities being designed with cyclists in mind, and last-mile delivery by bike becoming more popular than ever. Regardless of upcoming political decisions on zero-emission policies, we’re convinced that the shift toward greener cities is here to stay. Bring on the cargo bikes! Here’s to even more cargo bike solutions in 2025! We’re excited to see what’s in store for next year. In the meantime, we’re already partnering with many of these brands and suppliers, offering a comprehensive range of cargo bikes, parts for maintenance and repairs, and accessories to enhance the ride. Let’s work together to make cities greener and cargo bikes even more popular in today’s urban landscape! About the International Cargo Bike festival The International Cargo Bike Festival is organized by Jos Sluijsmans and Tom Parr, who aim to inspire the world to replace cars and vans in urban areas with cargo bikes. They believe we’re in the Decade of the Cargo Bike, and that cargo bikes are set to become mainstream this century. #decadeofthecargobike

7 biggest micromobility trends

Whether it's riding an electric bike from the train station to work, using a cargo bike for trips to the market, or zipping around on a scooter to reach the city center quickly, micromobility is everywhere, and we expect it to keep growing. Here are the seven major trends in micromobility. We describe micromobility as: "Light, healthy and sustainable means of transportation for daily travel within the city and its surroundings." Emission free urban centers Car-free city centers and low-emission zones are already familiar to us. In order to significantly reduce air pollution in cities, urban areas are becoming more environmentally friendly by taking a more conscious approach to emissions. These so-called low-emission zones mean that cars, trucks, and other goods transport can only enter certain areas if they are emission-free or use less polluting transport. If this is not the case, it is advised to park outside these zones and continue into the city center using alternative transportation. In some cities (e.g., in Belgium), a day pass can be requested to enter the zone. In zero-emission zones, all vehicles within the area must be emission-free. This means that gas and diesel-powered goods transport must switch to electric vehicles or find alternative ways to deliver packages, supplies, or hot food. First and last mile City centers are getting increasingly congested, cars are being restricted more often, and traffic jams are getting worse. This leads us to the next trend: using lightweight transportation for the first and last miles of your journey. In other words, combining various modes of transportation to reach your final destination more easily, quickly, and sustainably. Last mile You start your trip by car, park it at a mobility station, and then continue with a pre-booked electric bike. The benefits? Avoiding traffic jams in city centers and maintaining flexibility. First ánd last mile You commence your journey with a (foldable) bike, then switch to public transportation, and finally, complete your trip on a scooter. The benefits? No waiting for bus connections, enjoying the scenery, and steering clear of traffic congestion. Rising popularity of lightweight transportation Fat bikes are zipping past, e-bikes are becoming fashion statements, and we can’t wait for the day e-scooters hit public roads. The bike path is now shared with dozens of new types of vehicles. Add to that the helmet law for mopeds, and it’s no wonder people are opting for other forms of micromobility. Micromobility is on the rise, and investing in high-quality, enjoyable-to-use modes of transportation is becoming increasingly essential. One could say that micromobility is becoming a way of life, wouldn't you agree? 😉 Avoiding traffic congestion We've already discussed this, but congestion around city centers, industrial areas, and popular routes is on the rise. You end up spending more time in traffic, and other modes of transportation are becoming more appealing. Sometimes, even those who aren't keen on biking at all find it an attractive option to reach their destination faster and with less frustration. Plus, it's a healthier choice. The growing importance of accessories and maintenance More and more people are opting for lightweight transportation, whether to replace their (second) car or to make their daily commutes more efficient, flexible, or enjoyable. Making stops along the way isn't an option, and practical accessories that make travel easier or more comfortable are a great addition. A breathable raincoat, a laptop bag that can easily be attached to your rack, solar-powered lighting, or a cargo fork that turns any bike into a compact cargo bike—all these accessories enhance the experience. Investing in such accessories and proper maintenance ensures lasting enjoyment! Packed and loaded Whether it's a cargo bike for parcels, mail, or deliveries, or a longtail bike for school runs, we're searching for fresh ways to transport ourselves, our shopping, and our children, along with all their school and sports gear. This also applies to the professional sector, for mail and package deliveries, technicians who need to move quickly between clients, and delivery drivers tasked with promptly delivering hot meals. We are actively seeking alternatives to delivery vans and cars, especially in car-free city centers and emission-free zones. From our perspective, this is a positive development! Healthier and more sustainable life It might sound cliché, but a significant trend is emerging toward a healthier and more environmentally conscious lifestyle. Sustainability has become a major concern for consumers and businesses, driven partly by the energy crisis and rising energy costs. We are becoming more conscious of our energy consumption, increasingly favoring electric transportation over gasoline or diesel vehicles. Amid the daily hustle and bustle, both mental and physical health are gaining importance. Our desire is to lead a life that is healthier, more sustainable, and more enjoyable, and this is where micromobility fits in perfectly. Want to stay informed about the latest trends? So, now you know everything about micromobility. Or do you? The way we move around cities is changing. New forms of urban mobility are emerging and gaining popularity. Micromobility is on the rise, and we’re here to keep you updated. Follow PENDLR for the latest news and updates!
