Micromobility in urban areas: how infrastructure and mobility are changing Anyone who looks around sees it immediately: micromobility is growing. And fast too. Micromobility requires new infrastructure and regulations More different means of transport also means: more different speeds, weights and forms of use. An e-bike rides faster than a normal bicycle, a cargo bike transports children and delivery companies are also focusing on longtails. This brings together different speeds, needs and forms of mobility. You can see this directly reflected in regulations and infrastructure. Municipalities adjust speed zones and reconsider the place of certain vehicles on the roadway. At the same time, bike lanes are being widened, separate parking zones for shared vehicles are being introduced and car parking spaces are disappearing to make room for micromobility. In Amsterdam, for example, thousands of parking spaces have been removed in a few years to create space for cyclists and pedestrians. That is not a detail, that is a redistribution of scarce urban space. What is the result? The city is gradually being designed differently. Less focused on stationary cars, more on movement. More people-oriented. And with that, a new dynamic is also emerging on the bike path: busier, faster, more diverse. This requires clear frameworks and smart solutions. The last mile: where everything comes together Perhaps the most visible change? The rise of the last mile solution. More and more travelers combine train or bus with a shared bike or folding bike. The bicycle is no longer an alternative to public transport, but an extension of it. In the Netherlands, tens of thousands of shared bikes are spread across hundreds of locations and millions of trips are made annually. What does that mean? Amsterdam has been visibly accelerating towards a less car-focused city in recent years. Parking spaces are disappearing from the streets neighborhood by neighborhood to make room for bicycle parking, wider bike lanes and greenery. More and more streets are designed as 30 km/h zones, allowing e-bikes and cargo bikes to flow more safely. In addition, the city works with fixed parking zones for shared bikes and other shared vehicles to guide the growth of micromobility in the right direction. Groningen has been building further on its strong cycling position in recent years with new bike streets, additional parking capacity around Groningen station and improved cycling routes towards surrounding villages. Efforts are also being made to create faster and more comfortable connections for e-bikes, so commuting distances remain attractive without a car. The city center is increasingly designed for pedestrians and cyclists, while car traffic is guided via the ring road. Houten shows that smaller cities also continue to innovate. The existing, separated cycling infrastructure is further optimized with better lighting, safer intersections and direct connections to new residential areas. Velofollies 2026: trois jours de micromobilitĂ©, d’inspiration et de bonnes conversations

Les 16, 17 et 18 janvier, PENDLR Ă©tait prĂ©sent Ă  Velofollies. Et quel week-end ce fut ! Pendant trois jours, tout a tournĂ© autour de la micromobilitĂ© et de la mobilitĂ© de demain. Habituellement, Andy Machiels, Jenno Van Heck et Pascal Vandamme se dĂ©placent pour rendre visite aux concessionnaires et partenaires en Flandre, mais cette fois-ci, c’était l’inverse : Velofollies a rĂ©uni tout le monde. Pascal a immĂ©diatement remarquĂ© Ă  quel point cela Ă©tait spĂ©cial : "Velofollies est vraiment le moment oĂč le secteur se retrouve. On voit ce sur quoi chacun travaille et on ressent l’énergie sur le salon." Jenno ajoute que c’est prĂ©cisĂ©ment ce mĂ©lange qui rend l’expĂ©rience si prĂ©cieuse : "Ici, on ne parle pas seulement avec les concessionnaires, mais aussi directement avec les consommateurs. Cela apporte Ă©normĂ©ment d’informations." La mobilitĂ© de demain prĂ©sentĂ©e de maniĂšre reconnaissable Lors du salon, PENDLR a de nouveau prĂ©sentĂ© la campagne MobilitĂ© de demain, adaptĂ©e en concept de stand avec des scĂ©narios reconnaissables. Il ne s’agit pas de produits isolĂ©s, mais de situations quotidiennes dans lesquelles chacun peut se reconnaĂźtre : les trajets domicile-travail, les dĂ©placements en famille et la ville en mouvement avec les vĂ©los cargo et les cargobikes. Selon Jenno, c’est prĂ©cisĂ©ment lĂ  que rĂ©side la force du concept : "Les visiteurs se reconnaissent dans ces scĂ©narios. Il ne s’agit pas d’un vĂ©lo sur un socle, mais de la maniĂšre dont on se dĂ©place au quotidien." Pascal ajoute que cela crĂ©e naturellement la discussion : "Nous invitons les gens Ă  rĂ©flĂ©chir Ă  des solutions. Ainsi, nous montrons que la micromobilitĂ© fonctionne dĂ©jĂ  aujourd’hui et n’est pas seulement pour demain." De cette maniĂšre, PENDLR rend la mobilitĂ© de demain tangible et accessible, en collaboration avec ses visiteurs. Beaucoup d’attention pour le vĂ©lo pliant, tant chez les concessionnaires que chez les consommateurs Un Ă©lĂ©ment marquant du stand Ă©tait l’attention particuliĂšre portĂ©e aux vĂ©los pliants. Depuis le dĂ©but de l’annĂ©e, PENDLR est Ă©galement autorisĂ© Ă  distribuer UTO en Flandre, une Ă©tape qui a Ă©tĂ© fiĂšrement mise en avant. Pascal a immĂ©diatement remarquĂ© cet enthousiasme : "Les concessionnaires sont positifs Ă  propos d’UTO depuis un certain temps, mais c’était vraiment agrĂ©able de pouvoir entendre directement l’avis des consommateurs." Jenno a surtout remarquĂ© autre chose : "On peut voir que beaucoup de gens recherchent dĂ©jĂ  un vĂ©lo pliant de maniĂšre ciblĂ©e. Cette connaissance est dĂ©jĂ  prĂ©sente. Et avec AurĂ©lien d’UTO, nous avons pu approfondir cette expertise encore davantage, tant auprĂšs des consommateurs que des concessionnaires." Le vĂ©lo pliant s’est rĂ©vĂ©lĂ© ĂȘtre un vĂ©ritable aimant pour le public. Focus sur les dĂ©placements en famille Outre les trajets domicile-travail, les dĂ©placements en famille ont attirĂ© une attention particuliĂšre. Partout sur le salon, on pouvait voir des vĂ©los cargo, des longtails et des accessoires intelligents, un signal clair que la micromobilitĂ© continue de croĂźtre. Jenno y voit une tendance plus large : "Il ne s’agit plus seulement des trajets domicile-travail. Les familles dĂ©couvrent vraiment la micromobilitĂ© comme une alternative Ă  part entiĂšre." Cela s’est Ă©galement confirmĂ© sur le stand de PENDLR, oĂč les vĂ©los pour enfants d’Alpina ont suscitĂ© beaucoup d’intĂ©rĂȘt. Pascal a particuliĂšrement remarquĂ© la popularitĂ© de Vici : "Concessionnaires et consommateurs Ă©taient trĂšs intĂ©ressĂ©s par le vĂ©lo Ă©volutif, et le nouveau modĂšle 16 pouces a Ă©galement attirĂ© beaucoup d’attention." Des biĂšres Stella sur le vĂ©lo cargo Les vĂ©los cargo, les longtails et les cargobikes Ă©taient incontournables Ă  Velofollies. Selon Pascal, ce n’est pas une tendance passagĂšre : "Ces formes de micromobilitĂ© gagnent durablement en popularitĂ©. C’est pourquoi nous les intĂ©grons dĂ©libĂ©rĂ©ment dans nos scĂ©narios." Un bel exemple est le vĂ©lo cargo Omnium personnalisĂ© de Green Leaf Projects prĂ©sentĂ© sur le stand, entiĂšrement Ă©quipĂ© avec des marques complĂ©mentaires telles que Kinekt, Ergon et Fahrer. Jenno rit en s’en souvenant : "Et oui, ce crate de biĂšres Stella a Ă©videmment attirĂ© encore plus l’attention. Parfois, il faut aussi savoir s’amuser un peu." Regard vers le B2B Festival Le regard se tourne dĂ©jĂ  vers l’avenir. Les 8 et 9 fĂ©vrier, PENDLR prĂ©sentera presque le mĂȘme concept lors du B2B Festival. Jenno considĂšre que c’est une Ă©tape logique : "LĂ  aussi, nous guidons les visiteurs Ă  travers des scĂ©narios reconnaissables avec des solutions directement applicables." Pascal souligne que les grandes marques jouent un rĂŽle important dans ce contexte : "Des marques comme Alpina, Ergon, Vici, Spinder, UTO et Brooks seront Ă  nouveau bien prĂ©sentes. Cela montre Ă  quel point l’histoire de la micromobilitĂ© est riche et complĂšte." De cette maniĂšre, PENDLR collabore avec les concessionnaires, partenaires et marques dans un objectif commun : rendre les dĂ©placements quotidiens plus flexibles, efficaces et durables.

Bergsma Folding Bicycles et PENDLR : partenaires dans le domaine de la micromobilité

In Zwolle, Pieter and Helena gradually built up a unique bicycle company. No racing bikes and no e-bikes in all shapes and sizes, but one clear choice: folding bikes. It turned out to be a golden opportunity and, at the same time, a glimpse into the future of micro-mobility. They work closely with PENDLR, a partner that, like them, is committed to compact and sustainable mobility solutions. Through PENDLR, they purchase brands such as Bohlt, UGO, Dahon and UTO and supplement their range with parts and accessories to provide their customers with a complete service. From living room to shop floor It started out as a bit of fun, refurbishing used folding bikes in their flat and reselling them for ‘a few quid more’. ‘We loved figuring out how these bikes worked and then sending them back out into the world in better shape,’ says Helena. The hobby grew to fill their living room. Customers literally came to their home to look, and registration with the Chamber of Commerce followed. During the coronavirus pandemic, the duo moved from a temporary garage to a cosy building in Assendorp. Soon, that too became too small. They are now in their current building with more space, but even here they have less and less room, Helena admits with a laugh. Why only folding bicycles? ‘You buy a folding bicycle as a solution to a mobility issue,’ says Pieter. Customers are often goal-oriented. ‘People come here because they want to take their camper van on the road, take a boat out on the water or find a smart way to cover the last stretch from the station to work, for example.’ The perception that folding bikes are difficult to pedal disappears as soon as someone takes a test ride. ‘Many people are surprised at how comfortable and stable they are to ride. After a few minutes, they often say: I would feel confident cycling to work on this,’ adds Helena. New target groups are also discovering the advantages. ‘Electric car drivers are coming to us more and more often. Because charging stations are not always close to their destination, they use the folding bicycle from the car park as a convenient means of transport,’ says Pieter. ‘We are also seeing increasing demand for folding bicycles in urban areas. The folding bicycle is increasingly seen there as the answer to flexible and sustainable transport.’ City on the move The urban environment is changing rapidly. ‘You see cities becoming more compact and there being less and less space for cars,’ says Helena. ‘People want to remain mobile, but in a way that suits the hustle and bustle of the city.’ The folding bicycle fits in perfectly with this. It can be taken on the train or tram, fits in the lift or under a desk, and makes the last part of the journey easy. ‘For many commuters, it's a relief that they no longer have to depend on a bus or parking space. They unfold their bicycle and they're there,’ explains Pieter. As a result, the folding bicycle is evolving from a recreational product into a fully-fledged means of transport. ‘We really see it as a permanent solution,’ says Pieter. ‘The demand for compact and smart mobility is only increasing, and the folding bike fits right in.’ Service above all else Bergsma Folding Bicycles advertises modestly via Marktplaats, a camper club magazine and local channels, but relies primarily on craftsmanship and word-of-mouth advertising. The promise is clear: personal advice, fast service and honest repairs. On fixed days, there is room for maintenance. Customers schedule an appointment, have a cup of coffee and pop into town. Often, the bicycle is ready within a few hours. This results in loyal fans who even come back from Limburg. The customer base is broad and demonstrates the versatility of the folding bicycle. Motorhome owners, water sports enthusiasts, commuters, lorry and coach drivers, as well as the fire brigade, police and local authorities rely on Bergsma Vouwfietsen. Pieter developed practical carrier solutions and crates for the fire brigade. Everything to help their customers get on their way. A proprietary brand with a recognisable image In addition to the shop, Pieter and Helena developed their own line under the same name as the shop. Frames that fit, parts that can take a beating, and specifications that were shaped by talking to their customers. The result is a series of models that are often considered the best. The models were given playful personal names, named after their children, and a clear signature. There is a blue version with three gears and a black one with seven gears. Recently, a foldable balance bike was added to the range. ‘We tailor each production run to what customers really want, from chain guards and anti-puncture tyres to the seating position,’ says Helena. Smart components and circular solutions What cannot be purchased, they make themselves. Think of extra-long and stiffer seat posts for classic diameters and special handlebars that allow for a straighter posture. When a frame can no longer be salvaged, parts are carefully reused. This results in boxes of rare parts from specific brands. Exactly what a customer with an older folding bicycle needs. The result is sustainable and service-oriented. Collaboration with Kruitbosch and PENDLR The collaboration with Kruitbosch played an important role for Bergsma Folding Bicycles from the very beginning. ‘Kruitbosch was the first wholesaler we registered with,’ says Helena. ‘That gave us access to new products and helped us make the transition from hobby to a real business.’ That initial collaboration instilled confidence and provided the opportunity to establish the shop professionally. Pieter and Helena now work with PENDLR, the new name under which Kruitbosch is continuing to develop. For them, this fits in seamlessly with their own vision. ‘PENDLR is strongly committed to micro-mobility, and folding bikes are naturally part of that,’ says Pieter. ‘It's great to see a large player choosing the same direction as us, namely offering solutions that suit how people want to get around in and around the city.’ PENDLR stocks various folding bicycle brands, including Bohlt, UGO, Dahon and UTO. They also source the necessary parts and accessories, so they can always offer their customers a complete and reliable range. Growing while maintaining proximity The ambition is great. Plans include larger premises, further expansion of their own line and collaboration with other shops. One condition remains unchanged: assembly and service must always meet the standards that Pieter and Helena themselves strive for. ‘We want to grow, but not through mass production. Personal contact and careful finishing are part of this product.’
