Today is Car free day. A day when cities around the world showcase what the future of urban mobility could look like. Residents and visitors are invited to leave their cars behind and try alternatives such as bicycles, e-bikes, or public transport. Of course, this doesnât mean that nobody uses a car at all. Businesses and residents still drive when necessary. Car free day is more of an aspiration: a moment of awareness that shows how our cities change when micromobility and other sustainable modes of transport are given more space. Fewer Cars, More Living Space While Car free day mainly symbolizes change, more and more cities are introducing structural policies to restrict cars and reshape urban mobility. Paris, for example, is investing heavily in car-free zones, transforming hundreds of streets into green, low-traffic areas. Madrid has introduced âMadrid Central,â a strict low-emission zone that keeps polluting vehicles out of the city center. In Ghent, a circulation plan has turned the historic center into a largely car-free zone without making the city inaccessible. These measures result in cleaner air, safer streets, and above all: more room for people, micromobility, and quality of life. The Rise of Micromobility Within this transition in urban mobility, micromobility is playing an ever greater role. Where the car once dominated, bicycles, e-bikes, cargo bikes, and folding bikes are now gaining ground. For distances up to ten kilometers, the bicycle often proves to be faster and more practical than the car, especially in busy city centers. And the numbers speak for themselves. Research by Grand View Horizon and McKinsey shows that the European micromobility market is growing at nearly thirteen percent annually. By 2030, the global market could reach an astonishing 340 billion dollars. Whatâs more, the use of shared e-bikes and e-scooters in Europe grew by almost forty percent in 2022 compared to the year before. These figures prove that micromobility is not a passing trend but a lasting and powerful force shaping the future of how we move. The Power of the Last Mile An important element in the shift toward smarter urban mobility is the so-called âlast mile.â In the past, many people drove their entire journey by car. Now, commuters increasingly combine different modes of transport. You might take the train to the station and then cover the last few kilometers to the office or an appointment effortlessly with a folding bike or shared bike. Even drivers are seeking micromobility solutions for those final stretches. As city centers become harder to access and parking spaces more scarce, many turn to folding bikes to save time and reduce stress. This is especially true for electric car drivers, who often park their vehicles at a charging station and complete the remaining distance quickly and efficiently by folding bike. From Transport to Urban Logistics The impact of micromobility goes far beyond daily commuting. Urban logistics is rapidly transforming as well. Cargo bikes deliver parcels, groceries, and even collect waste. Where delivery vans are often stuck in traffic, bicycles and other light vehicles glide easily through narrow streets. Even independent professionals such as painters and other tradespeople are embracing cargo bikes to transport their tools and materials efficiently. This shift demonstrates how micromobility also provides smart business solutions, perfectly aligned with the broader context of sustainable urban mobility. Together, we make our cities more efficient and more livable. The City of Tomorrow Begins Today Car free day shows that the city of tomorrow is closer than we think. A city where micromobility and smart solutions for urban mobility become the new standard. At PENDLR, youâll find everything you need to adapt to this change. From high-quality parts and accessories to the knowledge and expertise that help you grow with the rising demand. Join PENDLR today and help build the city of tomorrow. Despite the current challenges in the market, the bicycle industry continues to evolve rapidly. At Eurobike 2025, the international trade fair for bicycles and micromobility, numerous developments came together that show where the future of cycling and smart mobility is heading. Several colleagues from PENDLR were present, and we are pleased to share key insights on sustainability, innovation, and micromobility. Sustainability Becomes the New Standard Brands such as Basil and New Looxs presented their latest collections, featuring fresh designs and clever solutions. Both are making strong efforts to use recycled materials, responding to the growing demand for sustainable alternatives within the micromobility sector. Schwalbe also emphasized sustainability in its latest product range. Selle Royal expanded its Stracciatella line and introduced the new Nivo grips, which offer improvements in both grip and comfort. Sustainability is no longer a niche topic, but a fundamental part of product development across the entire micromobility landscape. Innovation at Brand and Product Level There were many exciting new developments. ABUS introduced two new helmets: the ultra-light and aerodynamic Airbreaker 2.0, and the Taipan, specially designed for gravel riders but also relevant for various forms of micromobility. AXA launched the Atlas, a new generation of ring locks that smartly combines safety with user convenience. Eovolt also made a big announcement: the company will continue under a new name, UTO. Why the change? Because UTO is expanding with its very first non-electric model. The name Eovolt mainly suggested e-bikes, while UTO reflects a broader ambition to reach more people, both with and without electric assistance. The electric version, the UTO PRO20 E-bike (formerly known as Afternoon Pro), won the Eurobike Gold Award in the e-bike category, an important recognition within the micromobility market. Cargo Bikes and Light Electric Vehicles on the Rise Traditional cargo bikes have long been dominant, but now we are seeing a growing number of longtail solutions. These extended bicycles offer a more flexible option: they are lighter, easier to handle, and suitable for various transport needs. Innovations such as smart trailers also allow a standard bike to be temporarily converted into a longtail, giving users additional cargo capacity with minimal investment. At the same time, the supply of Light Electric Vehicles is growing rapidly. These compact, electrically powered vehicles are becoming an important part of the micromobility market. They are designed for efficient urban travel, often without a chain and with a drive-by-wire system. Since they are legally considered bicycles, no driving license is required. This makes them attractive to employers and fleet operators who want to involve a broader group of employees in urban delivery and service tasks. Bicycle Retail Is Visibly Changing One noticeable trend on the Eurobike 2025 exhibition floor was the changing approach to product presentation. In the past, the focus was often on filling the shelves with as many products as possible. Now, more and more brands are choosing to highlight atmosphere, experience, and a strong brand identity. This shift toward storytelling and brand building matches the changing expectations of consumers within the micromobility sector. Micromobility Is Gaining Visibility, Also at Eurobike That micromobility is no longer a niche becomes clear from a strategic change Eurobike will implement from 2026. The familiar trade fair will focus more on the world of sports and performance cycling, while organizer Fairnamic is launching a new specialized event called mobifuture. This new fair will focus entirely on electric micromobility, with special attention to e-scooters, cargo bikes, microcars, and shared mobility solutions. The two fairs will continue as separate brands, but will take place at the same time and at the same location in Frankfurt. This creates a clear distinction: Eurobike will highlight sport, performance, high-tech, and cycling culture, while mobifuture will be the central place for urban and sustainable micromobility solutions. Seizing Opportunities Together The bicycle industry is accelerating. Innovation, sustainability, and flexibility are no longer trends but essential requirements. At PENDLR, we believe micromobility is the key to sustainable transport in cities and beyond. Whether it is about smart parts and accessories, cargo solutions, or the layout of your product shelves, we are your partner in micromobility. Together we make daily commutes more flexible, efficient, and green. The opportunities are here, let us seize them together.

Today is Recycling Day! To mark this special occasion, we visited Schwalbe to learn more about their pioneering recycling program for both inner and outer bicycle tires. Schwalbe, a partner of PENDLR, has been working for years to make its production process more sustainable and to close the material loop. We spoke with Maiko Bakker and Elisa Treling about Schwalbeâs ambitions and the challenges they face along the way. Sustainability as a Core Value "We have always been a manufacturer of bicycle tires, nothing more, nothing less," says Maiko. "Since we donât have a large investment company behind us and focus solely on bicycle tires, we can truly be pioneers in sustainability." The first steps towards recycling were taken as early as the year 2000. "That was when we first started exploring what we could do with the waste streams of bicycle tires. Since a bicycle tire is made of many materials and naturally wears down with use, the remaining material is less pure. This makes reuse more challenging." Innovative Recycling Solutions The first recycling attempts involved compressing tires into rubber mats, like those used in bike workshops and gyms. "That was a great first step, but it was still just âdowncycling.â We wanted to go further." In 2010, Schwalbe introduced a key innovation: a puncture protection layer made from recycled latex. "At that time, we were not yet able to use high-quality recycled rubber for the tread, but we could use it for the puncture protection layer. Today, this layerâone-third of which is made from recycled latexâis found in our most popular tires, such as the Marathon and Energizer Plus." The Major Breakthrough: Recycling Inner Tubes A major breakthrough came in 2015 with the recycling of inner tubes. "Inner tubes are ideal for recycling because they are made entirely of butyl rubber," Maiko explains. "We remove the valves, which can be fully reused, and the rubber is devulcanized so that we can create new inner tubes." The process starts at bicycle shops and dealers. "Dealers collect the inner tubes and can send them to us free of chargeâwe cover the shipping costs," says Elisa. "All the inner tubes are then stored in large containers in Germany before being shipped back to Indonesia for recycling." The program grew rapidly. "In the Netherlands alone, we now recycle about 400,000 inner tubes per year! What I personally find amazing is how skeptical dealers were in the beginning. âIâll just throw them away,â we often heard. But now, nearly 1,300 dealers actively send in tubes. If our recycling portal goes down, our inbox floods with messages," Maiko laughs. The Benelux is not the only region where Schwalbe runs this program. "We are active all across Europe, as well as in the US and the UK, and we are constantly looking for opportunities to expand." Outer Tires: The Biggest Challenge Recycling outer tires turned out to be an even bigger challenge. "An outer tire consists of multiple materials, including rubber, steel, and chemical additives. You canât recycle something that is made up of so many different components," Maiko explains. "Thatâs why we partnered with Pyrum Innovations. Together, we developed a process in which outer tires are shredded and the raw materials are separated again." Once collected, the outer tires undergo a process that recovers gas, oil, textiles, steel, and Carbon Black. Carbon Black is then used in the production of the Green Marathon, which is made from 100% Fair Rubber, 99% free of harmful substances, and consists of 80% recycled and renewable materials. In Germany, the recycling of outer tires has already been a great success, and we hope to introduce it in the Netherlands in the coming years. From Recycling to Conscious Material Choices Beyond recycling, Schwalbe is also critically assessing the origins of its raw materials. "For coffee and chocolate, Fairtrade certification has been around for years, but for rubber, it didnât really exist. There was a small organization called Fair Rubber, but only a few small players were involved. We decided to join Fair Rubber, and now we pay producers 150% of the global market priceâprovided they meet fair production standards. Today, 70% of our production carries the Fair Trade label, and our goal is to reach 100% by 2030." A Taste for More Schwalbe is committed to embedding sustainability even further into the cycling industry. "The strongest part of our story is that this is not just a marketing gimmick. Every sustainable product we introduce has the same price as its predecessor. We only sell the sustainable version. We want recycling and sustainability to become the norm, not the exception." "It should be as natural as collecting and returning glass bottles or batteries." With millions of tires already recycled and a growing international network of sustainable dealers, Schwalbe is proving that a circular economy in the cycling industry is possible. "Weâre only at the beginning of whatâs possible, and we are determined to push even further." Working Together for a Sustainable Future Schwalbeâs innovative recycling programs demonstrate that true sustainability is achievable in the cycling industry. By continuously investing in circular solutions, they prove that sustainability does not have to come at the cost of quality or affordability. At PENDLR, we share the same vision: a cycling world where reuse and recycling are the standard. Thatâs why weâre proud to partner with Schwalbe. Together, we are making daily mobility more flexible, efficient, and green!
